Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology represents a transformative approach to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases by utilizing catheter-based, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and manage heart conditions. Unlike traditional cardiac surgery, which often requires large incisions and extended recovery periods, interventional techniques involve inserting thin, flexible tubes (catheters) into blood vessels—commonly through the radial artery in the wrist or the femoral artery in the groin—to reach the heart and perform precise therapeutic actions. These procedures are often guided by advanced imaging technologies such as fluoroscopy, intravascular ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography, which allow for real-time visualization of blood vessels and cardiac structures. One of the most common procedures in interventional cardiology is percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), more commonly known as angioplasty. In this procedure, a balloon-tipped catheter is used to open up narrowed or blocked coronary arteries, often followed by the placement of a stent to keep the artery open and restore normal blood flow to the heart muscle. These interventions have proven highly effective in the treatment of coronary artery disease, especially in patients suffering from angina or those who have had a heart attack.
